Our homes truly make us happy, and especially when we're celebrating, it feels like a natural time to refresh and renew our surroundings. A space-by-space effort may make it easier to commit to the entire task; in the end, your entire house will be clean and clutter-free. Here's a plan to help you make the most of it:
- Dig up the dust from top to bottom, starting with cobwebs from the ceiling to the floor. Check your curtains or blinds, shake or wash as needed. Dust your books, shelves, and accessories. Remove anything that doesn't belong in the space and return it to its place.
- Pay attention to the floor. Clean floors make a big difference in the way a room looks and feels. Cleaning carpets if necessary and re-scrubbing your floors will make a big difference. Pick up everything you find on the floor, even in hidden places like under the sofa.
- Organize and edit. Your goal is to trim the contents of your shelves to the point where everything fits with room to spare. Tip: If you have children with some toy baskets or boxes, you'll make cleaning easier. Change the toys with a new selection every few weeks to keep it interesting.
- Sparkle and shine. Clean mirrors and windows. If you have glass tables or shelves, today is the day to make them shine!
- Rearrange furniture. Dust, wash, and clean upholstered furniture, cushions, and comforters as needed. Remove or update any items that aren't in their best condition.
- Use some styling tricks. Now that your space is clean and tidy, it's time to add the finishing touches. Check the pots, trim dead leaves, and move them out of dark corners where they're not getting enough light. Place some books and objects on your accent tables. Organize your decor.
- Perform daily maintenance. Commit to simple tasks. Always return items to their proper place. Practice a one-in policy; if you receive a new book, choose an old one to let go.
